Beginning Quilting

Let Nola lead you through the basics of quilt making in 3 four hour sessions.  Whether you are a true beginner or just need a refresher, you will come away from this class with a finished quilt.  This would also be a great opportunity for a child or grandchild to learn to sew with you.  You will learn: fabric selection, accurate cutting, piecing with a quarter inch seam allowance, machine quilting and binding.

Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: This class is for Beginners, no previous sewing experience is required. This would be a good class for parent and child to learn together.
Materials Included: Class Handout
Requirements: 9 coordinating Fat Quarters (FQ) for blocks; 3/8 yard for binding; 1 5/8 yard for backing; Crib-size batt; Sewing Machine in good working condition, with 1/4" Patchwork Foot and Walking Foot, preferred but not required; Thread to blend; Sewing Kit containing, scissors, pins, seam ripper, Frixion Pen, basting safety pins; Rotary Cutter (45mm or larger), Ruler (61/2' x 24" preferred) Cutting Mat (18" x 24" or larger)
Instructor: Nola Rich
Instructor Bio: Nola has been part of the COTTONWOOD team for many years in a variety of responsibilities. She continues to make shop samples and is returning after the Covid year to teach classes again. Her earliest memory of using a sewing machine was hemming flannel squares for a new baby in the house - at the age of 5! She made her first quilt in college in 1973. She lives in southern Albemarle County with her husband, horses, dogs - and llamas.
