The London Shirt (3 classes, 1:00pm-4:00pm)



Techniques to learn:  taking body measurements, cutting, seams and seams finishes, inserting sleeves and a collar, buttonholes and machine hemming.

London Shirt-Loose fitting shirt has diagonal-to-the-front side seams forming open side vents, swing back, and stand up or fold down collar.  Dropped shoulders with three-quarter length sleeves and folded cuff.  Seven-button closures.


Skill Level: Beginner
Skill Details: No prior experience necessary. (Basic machine knowledge a plus) Sewing machine or Serger

You'll learn the fundamentals, including threading, stitch length, cutting width, and differential feed, while also discovering the different stitches your machine can do, such as overlock, flatlock, and rolled hem. Learn to secure seams, turn corners, and more.
Requirements: London shirt pattern
Cotton woven fabrics per pattern
Sharp sewing scissors to cut out fabric
(Serger participants will also need a machine for buttonholes)
Buttons per pattern
Lightweight fusible interfacing per pattern

Helpful to download and/ or print the Overlocker Workbook that corresponds to your machine.

Light to medium-weight cotton, linen, rayon, polyester and silk.

Instructor Bio: Kris Califano has been sewing for over 50 years and quilting for 30. She attended Florida State University where she earned her B.S. in Fashion Design & Merchandising, and later owner of 3 sewing and quilt shops for over 10 years in Florida. Kris has extensive knowledge of machines, as well as quilting techniques.
She enjoys sharing her knowledge of techniques as well her expertise on the products she uses and sells. Students enjoy the classes and feel a sense of accomplishment as well as an understanding of techniques that can be used in future projects.
Kris is an educator for the Rhinestone Genie and a Certified National Educator for Pam Damour, the Decorating Diva. She is an award winning quilter and holds other certifications in quilting education as well as being a Jenny Haskins Academy of Accreditation Embroidery Teacher. She is an amusing and talented instructor and salesperson, her passion and enthusiasm are highly contagious.
During the summer months you may find Kris sailing, teaching sailing and competing in sailing regattas in Virginia and Florida.
Kris recently moved to the Charlottesville area and is looking forward to meeting COTTONWOOD's clientele as well as sharing her knowledge on the sales floor and in the classroom.
Kris has 2 grown children as well as a "Polar Bear" Labrador named Skipper.
