COTTONWOOD - Tour de Quilt Blog
COTTONWOOD is getting ready. Are You?
We are so excited that the 14th Annual Central Virginia Tour de Quilt is less than a month away. Are You ready for a Road Trip? We’ll be ready to welcome you to COTTONWOOD, Charlottesville’s Quilt and BERNINA Shop. You will find a great selection of fabrics including lines from Andover, Benartex, Hoffman, Marcus, Moda, and Timeless Treasures to name a few. You will find everything from batiks, flannels, homespuns to wools. Lots of books, patterns and tools to inspire you, too!
With 5 days to complete the Tour de Quilt, take a little time to see the sights of Charlottesville – drive past Thomas Jefferson’s Rotunda, take a stroll on The Lawn along the Pavilions or better yet visit Monticello, just a 10 minute drive from COTTONWOOD. While you are there, enjoy lunch at nearby historic Michie Tavern, visit Ashlawn-Highland or pick apples at Carter Mountain Orchard. Take a sip at Jefferson Vineyard or visit several of the nearly 40 wineries or new breweries and cideries in the area.
While there is always something going on in Charlottesville, we are fortunate not to have a scheduled UVA football game during the Tour. Plan to stay overnight and enjoy your visit. Both the Hampton Inn and the English Inn are convenient to the shop and to Route 29. Want something special; try the Boars Head Inn in Charlottesville’s scenic country- side or the Omni Charlottesville Hotel on the Downtown Mall with lots of shops and restaurants.
For restaurants near the shop, try Hotcakes, an upscale cafe with specialty entrees and desserts made from scratch daily. Lord Hardwicke’s, a Charlottesville mainstay for over 40 years, serves up great big salads, hearty burgers, steaks and more along with some of Virginia’s special brews. And of course, there is Panera, Red Lobster, Outback and a host of other restaurants.
We’ll get the cider warming…can’t wait to welcome you to COTTONWOOD!

Quilting at COTTONWOOD
What's new in quilting? Come to COTTONWOOD to see and feel the latest fabrics from your favorite companies and designers such as Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts; Three Sisters, Barbara Brackman, Brannock and Patek, Minnick and Simpson, Blackbird Designs all of Moda; Jo Morton for Andover; Red Crinoline Quilts, formerly Bonnie Blue Quilts, from Marcus Brothers just to name a few of my favorites. We currently have over 500 bolts of batiks from Hoffman, Benartex, Timeless Treasures, Anthology and Moda to name a few.
Over our 18 year history, I have tried to maintain our humble beginnings' favorites - homespun, flannel and wool, while adding in the modern fabrics desired by todays new quilters. Such collections by designers Aneela Hoey, V and Co., Riley Blake, Me & My Sister Designs, are bright, fresh and ecletic appealing to the youth in all of us. New collections arrive almost daily.
Holiday fabrics have started arriving and we are just looking for space to put them out for you. We are repackaging our Little Bolts - bolt ends, to help make room for all the new arrivals. Check in often to see what's come in!
Our staff is passionate about their quilting as is evidenced by the over 200 quilts, totes, aprons and other items on display in the shop. Whether you want to make something you see or create you own design, we are here to assist you with fabric selection, yardage amounts, techniques and tools.
Most of the quilt kits offered in the shop have been made by one of the staff members prior to packaging, so we are confident that that the yardages are correct. A few of our kits, Collections for a Cause, for instance, come to us pre-packaged by Moda, but our staff members have made the quilt confirming that the contents are accurate.
Remember when we cut our quilt pieces with scissors and then along came the rotary cutter. Magic! And now we are using a Accucut GO! and a GO!Baby. Want to give them a try - come in for a demonstraion or check out our GO! and Sew classes.
